“Babooms, man, come on, that shit’s funny.”
Zane had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep a straight face at the impossibly contagious smile on other side of the table from him. Ty was sprawled back in his chair, t-shirt riding up a little bit when he stretched, tapping a pencil on his notebook, his hazel eyes bright and dancing.
“That’s not funny,” he managed.
“It’s damn hilarious,” Ty countered as he leaned forward.
“Okay, it’s a little funny,” Zane conceded. He glanced at the clock, surprised when a sharp pang of disappointment went through him at the time. “Time’s up.”
“Oh, come on, it wasn’t that bad,” Ty complained.
Zane shook his head, a small smile finally breaking through. “No, I mean, it’s six. You gotta get going.”
"Oh.” Ty frowned. He pursed his lips and nodded. “All right.” He started gathering up his books, stacking them according to size, and slid them into his bag.
Zane watched, not sure why he was intent on his staring but he always found Ty’s little glimpses of OCD fascinating for some reason.
Ty slung his bag on one shoulder and ran a hand through his hair. “So, um, Friday?”
Zane nodded. “Yep. See you after school.”
Ty backed out of the room, smiling softly. “See you, Zane.” He turned and nearly ran into Zane’s older sister. He dodged her gracefully and smiled. “Hi, Annie. Bye, Annie.”
“See you, Ty.” Annie smiled after him. She waited about five beats before raising an eyebrow at Zane.
Zane frowned at her. “What?”
“Don’t what me.”
"What?”
“Oh my god, you can’t be that dense.”
Zane gathered up his books and papers. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Because you’re clueless when it comes to someone flirting with you.”
Zane froze and looked at Annie. “I’m sorry what?”
She laughed and shook her head. “I love you but you’re an idiot. He likes you. A lot.”
A thousand things went through Zane’s mind and, for some odd reason, the only one to actually make it past his lips was, “He does?”
Annie looked at the ceiling as if she was sending a silent prayer to the heavens. “When’s his next tutoring session?”
“Friday,” Zane mumbled, his mind spinning with this new information.
“So, after tutoring, take him out to a movie or something.”
“He’s in high school,” Zane said for lack of any other protest.
Annie leaned against the doorframe. “He’s eighteen. I asked.”
Zane huffed and pushed past her to head to his own room. “I’ll think about it.”
“I could ask him out if you don’t want to,” Annie’s voice followed him down the hallway.
“Don’t you dare,” the words came out far more forceful as he spun around and pointed at her, surprising even him.
Annie just smiled widely. “There’s a seven o’clock showing of that action flick you were talking about seeing.”
