Zane fidgeted with the hem of his button-down, then smoothed it, then double-checked the buttons again, then smoothed it a final time before shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans to keep himself from messing with it again. He leaned against the cement wall of the movie theatre, next to the Star Trek poster where they’d agreed to meet. Ty had shot home after their tutoring session to get ready since he’d come directly from school.
A couple of girls walked by and shot him pretty smiles, but he was too nervous to smile back.
“Sorry, waiting long?” Ty jogged up, face flushed and smile wide.
“Uh, no. Not long at all.” Zane found himself smiling back. “I got the tickets already.”
“Cool. I’ll get the popcorn.” Ty backed away a few steps, his smile still etched across his face. “Come on, beautiful.”
Warmth unfurled in Zane’s chest and he followed.
The movie was good. Lots of explosions. Attractive people to look at. But Zane was hyper aware of the guy sitting on his left the entire time. His left side buzzed, his hand itching to take Ty’s. But he kept his hands to himself and forced his attention on the screen.
“Did you like it?” Ty turned to Zane as soon as the lights came up.
“Like what? Oh, yeah. It was great.”
Ty looked at him curiously then stood, looking around for the best way out of the crowded theatre. People lined the steps waiting to get out of the doors. They melded into the flow of people and Ty reached behind him to take Zane’s hand in his. Ty’s grip was warm and strong, long fingers and a class ring that barely bit into Zane’s hand. He surpressed a dopey smile as he followed Ty out into the theatre foyer.
Even when they were free of the crowd, Ty didn’t let go of Zane’s hand. They got a few odd looks but, thankfully, no one said anything. They exited into the cool air of the night and started strolling down the sidewalk.
“Where’d you park?” Ty asked.
“Back that way.” Zane jerked a thumb behind them.
“Gotta be anywhere?”
Zane shook his head.
Ty smiled. “Want to go for a walk?”
“At the theatre?” Zane looked around. All he saw were strip malls and parking lots.
Ty shrugged. “There’s a field behind the theatre. I go there sometimes.”
“Alone?”
Another shrug. “It’s quiet.”
Zane smiled at him. “Sure.” His heart did a stupid little flip in his chest when Ty smiled back.
They followed the sidewalk to the overflow parking lot around back of the building, still holding hands. Ty led Zane to the far end of the lot and into the grass, which gently sloped down into a natural bowl. As they walked, the city lights became more of a halo against the hillside and Zane felt like he’d stepped into another world.
Ty stopped and Zane didn’t notice until his arm jerked back. Zane turned, frowning. “You okay?” His stomach lurched at the look of contemplation on Ty’s face. He’d seen that look many times when Ty was trying to puzzle out a chemistry equation and he was frustrated that he couldn’t figure out the answer on his own.
Finally he licked his lips and looked at Zane. “Can I kiss you?”
Zane blinked at him. “Yeah?” He didn’t really mean for it to come out sounding like “duh?” but it did and he couldn’t take it back.
However, it didn’t matter because Ty’s lips were pressed against his and they were still holding hands and Ty’s other hand was in his hair clutching at his curls and Zane could not honestly remember why it’d taken him this long to ask Ty out on a date.
